ECOWAS PRE-ELECTION FACT-FINDING MISSION BEGINS ENGAGEMENTS WITH CABO VERDE STAKEHOLDERS
08 Mar, 2026The ECOWAS Pre-Election Fact-Finding Mission, led by H.E. Ambassador Abdel-Fatau Musah, PhD, Commissioner for Political Affairs, Peace and Security, has commenced high-level engagements in Cabo Verde ahead of the forthcoming legislative and presidential elections.
The mission began with a briefing session at the ECOWAS Permanent Representation in Cabo Verde, hosted by Ms Kelly Lopes. This was followed by a courtesy call on H.E. Jorge do Livramento, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Cooperation and Regional Integration, during which the delegation formally introduced the objectives of the mission and exchanged views on the institutional framework and national preparedness for the electoral process.
The delegation also visited the Multinational Maritime Coordination Centre – Zone G, where it was received by Captain Abdoulaye Dieng, Coordinator of the Centre, and his team. The discussions highlighted the importance of regional security cooperation and maritime coordination in supporting a stable governance environment in which democratic processes can take place.
These initial consultations form part of a structured process to assess the pre-electoral environment in a comprehensive and inclusive manner. In the coming days, the Mission will engage with electoral management bodies, political parties, civil society organisations, regulatory institutions and international partners.
Through this process, ECOWAS seeks to strengthen dialogue, foster confidence among stakeholders and contribute to an environment conducive to peaceful, transparent and credible elections, in line with the ECOWAS Supplementary Protocol on Democracy and Good Governance.
