ECOWAS Commission President Dr Omar Alieu Touray addresses World leaders at the first biennial summit for a sustainable, inclusive and resilient global economy
03 Oct, 2025The President of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Commission, H.E. Dr Omar Alieu Touray, took part in the first Biennial Summit for a Sustainable, Inclusive and Resilient Global Economy, held on the 24th of September 2025 at the level of Heads of State and Government, on the sidelines of the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly. The summit, themed “Implementing commitments on financing for development goals” brought together world leaders to assess international commitments and define concrete measures to finance sustainable development.
In his speech, President Touray stressed that no development commitment can be truly meaningful in the absence of peace and stability. He called for the effective implementation of United Nations Security Council Resolution 2719 on predictable and sustainable financing for African-led peace support operations, recalling that security is the foundation of any development goal.
Regional economic communities as drivers of integration, investment and economic growth. He emphasised that strengthening institutions such as ECOWAS is essential for building resilient economies capable of meeting the needs of their populations while advancing common regional priorities.
He also noted that sustainable development requires strong institutions and responsible governance. He stressed the importance of mobilising domestic resources, opening up more space for private sector participation and adopting innovative financing mechanisms to ensure inclusive and sustainable long-term development.
ECOWAS’ participation in this high-level summit on development and its financing reaffirmed the region’s commitment to global partnerships and its determination to actively contribute to the development of a more resilient and people-centred international development agenda.
