ECOWAS DONATES SOLAR PANEL SYSTEM TO SIX HIGH SCHOOLS IN LIBERIA AS PART OF ECOWAS @50 CELEBRATION

The Office of ECOWAS Resident Representative in Liberia donated solar panel systems to six (6) high schools in Margibi County, Republic of Liberia on 26th April 2026. The donation preceded a High School Quizzing Competition organized in commemoration of the ECOWAS 50th anniversary in Liberia. The competition was part of a series of activities and programs organized to commemorate ECOWAS’ 50th anniversary. It sought to promote academic excellence and intellectual rigor among high school students by providing a structured platform for knowledge-based engagement and increasing awareness of national and regional issues. In addition, it aimed to strengthen inter-school relationships and educational networking and to provide schools with materials needed to ensure a conducive learning environment for students.

As part of the awards package, the Office of the ECOWAS Resident Representative in Liberia installed and commissioned solar power systems at all six schools that participated in the competition to ensure access to reliable electricity, enhance security, support learning activities, and create opportunities for students to thrive. High Schools that benefited from this initiative are George V. Gibson Memorial United High School, St. Augustine Episcopal High School, St. Christopher Catholic High School, St. Paul Lutheran High School, Wenwu M. Miller High School, and Lingo Lippaye High School. In addition, ECOWAS donated brand-new tablets to members of the winning team from Lingo Lippaye High in recognition of their outstanding performance.

The beneficiary schools expressed appreciation to the ECOWAS Commission for the intervention, noting that the solar systems will significantly improve the learning environment and support academic activities. The school administrators highlighted that access to dependable electricity will enhance safety, facilitate evening study sessions, and improve the overall educational experience for students.

Speaking at the presentation ceremony, Dr. Nathaniel B. Walker, Officer in Charge, ECOWAS Commission Resident Representation Office, Liberia, expressed profound thanks and appreciation to the administrators for allowing their students to participate in the competition. He highlighted that, among other things, the ECOWAS @50 competition aimed to promote academic excellence, enhance students’ knowledge of national and regional developments, and provide material support to schools to create a learning environment. He thanked the students for spending countless hours studying material on the origin, functions, institutions, and activities of ECOWAS, and reaffirmed ECOWAS’s commitment to empowering young people and strengthening educational institutions throughout the region.
