THE GAMBIA AND ECOWAS LAUNCH WEST AFRICA’S FIRST STRATEGIC NATIONAL RESPONSE CENTRE TO COMBAT MISINFORMATION

In a landmark step toward strengthening regional stability and safeguarding democratic integrity, the Government of the Republic of The Gambia, with strategic support from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Commission, has officially inaugurated the National Misinformation and Disinformation Response Centre.

The Centre, the first of its kind in West Africa, is established to protect the integrity of the national information ecosystem, rebuild public trust, and shield democratic processes from the growing threat of digital manipulation and coordinated disinformation campaigns.

The inauguration ceremony was led by the Vice President of the Republic of The Gambia, H.E. Muhammad JALLOW, and the President of the ECOWAS Commission, H.E. Omar Alieu TOURAY. The event brought together senior government officials, representatives of civil society organizations, media institutions, and development partners.

Delivering his remarks, H.E. Omar Alieu TOURAY underscored the Centre’s strategic importance beyond national borders, positioning it as a critical regional asset in the collective fight against disinformation. He noted that manipulated media and fabricated narratives have increasingly contributed to ethnic tensions, electoral disruptions, and instability across the region.

“By enabling the sharing of data, methodologies, and early warning alerts, this Centre will strengthen the capacity of ECOWAS Member States to anticipate, detect, and neutralize cross-border disinformation campaigns targeting security, elections, and public health,” he stated.

Vice President Jallow emphasized that the initiative aligns with The Gambia’s broader vision for digital governance, anchored on transparency, accountability, and the protection of citizens in an evolving information landscape.

Addressing concerns around media freedom, the Minister of Information, Dr. Ismaila CEESAY, clarified the Centre’s mandate, stressing that it is not designed as a censorship mechanism.

“This Centre is not a tool for censorship. On the contrary, its purpose is to ensure that Gambians have access to verified, credible, and accurate information in an era defined by unprecedented digital manipulation,” he affirmed.

The National Misinformation and Disinformation Response Centre will focus on real-time fact-checking, the deployment of early warning systems to identify and mitigate inflammatory content, and the promotion of media and information literacy to build a more resilient and informed citizenry.

The initiative marks a significant milestone in ECOWAS’ ongoing efforts to enhance information integrity, strengthen democratic resilience, and foster peace and security across West Africa.
