ECOWAS APPOINTS FORMER PRESIDENT NANA AKUFO-ADDO TO LEAD ELECTION OBSERVATION MISSION TO THE REPUBLIC OF BENIN
27 Mar, 2026The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has appointed Nana Akufo-Addo as Head of its Election Observation Mission (EOM) to the forthcoming presidential election in the Republic of Benin, scheduled for 12 April 2026.
This appointment, conveyed by the President of the ECOWAS Commission, H.E. Dr Omar Alieu TOURAY, is in line with the Community’s enduring commitment to the promotion of democracy, good governance, and regional stability. The mission is expected to be deployed from 7 to 15 April 2026, pursuant to the provisions of the ECOWAS Supplementary Protocol on Democracy and Good Governance (2001), which provides the legal and normative framework for election observation within the region.
Former President Akufo-Addo brings to this assignment a wealth of experience in public service, democratic leadership, and constitutional governance. As the 5th President of Ghana’s Fourth Republic, he served two terms in office and played a significant role in strengthening democratic institutions and promoting the rule of law. A distinguished lawyer and long-standing advocate for human rights, he has been closely associated with landmark constitutional cases that reinforced judicial independence, expanded civic freedoms, and safeguarded equal political participation. His demonstrated statesmanship, particularly in moments of electoral contestation, has earned him widespread recognition as a committed democrat and a respected voice for peace and stability in Africa.
The ECOWAS Election Observation Mission under his leadership will comprise one hundred observers drawn from across Member States and key institutions of the Community. The delegation reflects a carefully balanced and multidisciplinary composition, bringing together experienced diplomats, electoral experts, representatives of national electoral commissions, members of the ECOWAS Parliament and the Council of the Wise, as well as officials from the ECOWAS Court of Justice. It will also include civil society actors and media professionals, thereby ensuring that the mission benefits from a wide range of technical expertise and perspectives necessary for a comprehensive and credible assessment of the electoral process.
In his capacity as Head of Mission, Nana Akufo-Addo will provide overall leadership and strategic direction to the delegation, guiding its engagements with national stakeholders and ensuring coherence in its observation activities. He will lead consultations with political authorities, electoral management bodies, security agencies, and civil society organizations, while overseeing the deployment of observers throughout the country. His role will further involve supervising the mission’s assessment of the pre-election environment, the conduct of polling, and post-election developments, culminating in the presentation of both the preliminary statement and the final report of the mission. These responsibilities are to be carried out in strict adherence to the principles of impartiality, neutrality, and professionalism that underpin ECOWAS election observation.
The mission itself will operate within the framework of established ECOWAS protocols and international best practices. Central to this is the ECOWAS Supplementary Protocol on Democracy and Good Governance (2001), which emphasizes constitutional order, transparency in electoral processes, independence of electoral institutions, equitable access to state resources and media, and respect for fundamental human rights. The Protocol further underscores zero tolerance for unconstitutional changes of government and places a premium on the credibility and integrity of elections as a cornerstone of democratic legitimacy in the region.
Through this deployment, ECOWAS reaffirms its confidence in the democratic process in the Republic of Benin and reiterates its call to all stakeholders to uphold peace, tolerance, and the rule of law. The appointment of former President Akufo-Addo reflects the Community’s continued reliance on experienced and respected leaders to accompany Member States in the conduct of peaceful, transparent, and credible elections.
