ECOWAS COMMISSION PROVIDES SOLAR-POWERED BOREHOLE AND RENOVATES SANITATION FACILITIES AT LEA PRIMARY SCHOOL IN ABUJA, NIGERIA
12 Mar, 2026The ECOWAS Commission, through the ECOWAS Peace Fund, on 25th February 2026, formally commissioned a solar-powered borehole and completed the renovation of 32 sanitation facilities at LEA Primary School, Wuse Zone 3, Abuja. This initiative exemplifies the Commission’s sustained commitment to advancing human security and enhancing community resilience through targeted investments in critical social infrastructure.
Funded by the ECOWAS Peace Fund and executed by The Adeola Adeyemi Foundation (TAAF), the project aims to improve access to clean water and hygienic sanitation for both pupils and staff, thereby fostering a safer and more dignified educational environment.
Delivering remarks on behalf of the Commissioner of Political Affairs, Peace and Security, Amb. Dr. Abdel-Fatau Musah, Mrs. Gloria Ugwunze emphasized that sustainable peace is fundamentally linked to human development. She highlighted that access to basic social amenities such as water and sanitation is crucial to protecting public health, promoting consistent school attendance, and reinforcing community stability.
“This intervention reflects the ECOWAS Peace Fund’s comprehensive approach to peacebuilding,” Mrs. Ugwunze stated. “Peace extends beyond the mere absence of conflict to include the presence of dignity, opportunity, and equitable access to essential services.”
The commissioning ceremony was graced by distinguished representatives from the Local Education Authority (LEA), the Universal Basic Education Board (UBEB), and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Education Secretariat. The Senior Special Assistant to the President on School Feeding and a representative of the Honourable Minister of the Federal Capital Territory were also in attendance. The high-level representation at the event underscored the significance of cross-institutional collaboration and affirmed a collective resolve to advance foundational education and child welfare through purposeful infrastructure investment.
The solar-powered borehole guarantees a reliable, environmentally sustainable water supply for the school community, while the renovated sanitation facilities address longstanding hygiene challenges. Collectively, these improvements are expected to significantly enhance the welfare and academic experience of the pupils.
