ECOMIG GHANCOY 9 HOLDS MEDAL PARADE AND GHANA’S 69TH INDEPENDENCE IN THE GAMBIA

Personnel of the Ghana Company 9 (GHANCOY 9) serving under the ECOWAS Mission in The Gambia (ECOMIG) were honoured with service medals and marked Ghana’s 69th Independence Anniversary on Friday 6 March 2026 in Barra, The Gambia.

This year’s celebration was held under the theme “Building Prosperity, Restoring Hope,” reflecting both Ghana’s national aspirations and the broader objectives of peace support operations in West Africa.

The highlight of the ceremony was the presentation of the ECOMIG Medal to officers and soldiers in recognition of their meritorious service. The medal symbolises dedication, sacrifice and commitment to maintaining peace and stability in the West African sub-region.

Addressing the gathering, the ECOMIG Force Commander, Col Aliou Tine commended the officers and soldiers of GHANCOY 9 for their professionalism and dedication to the mission. He highlighted the role of the Ghanaian contingent in maintaining security within its area of responsibility through coordinated patrols and close cooperation with the Gambian security services. Particular mention was made of the contingent’s role at the Barra Ferry Terminal, a vital transportation link connecting the north and south banks of the country.

Speaking at the event, the Medals Day Delegation Leader Brig Gen Stanley Mezo representing the leadership of the Ghana Armed Forces reaffirmed Ghana’s long-standing tradition in international peace support operations. He said Ghanaian troops have served with distinction in numerous missions across the world, earning a reputation for professionalism and respect for host communities. The delegation leader congratulated the medal recipients and urged them to wear the decoration with pride as a symbol of honourable service and Ghana’s continued commitment to regional peacekeeping.

The Resident Representative of the President of ECOWAS in the Gambia, HE Miatta Lily French who was the special Guest of Honour highlighted GHANCOY 9 personnel playing key roles in maintaining security through joint patrols and close cooperation with Gambian security forces, static duties at the Barra Ferry Terminal which is a vital transport and economic link in the country, has helped ensure the smooth movement of people and goods.

Her Excellency Miatta Lily French praised the contingent for its strong civil–military cooperation with local communities. She highlighted humanitarian outreach programmes including support to health facilities, educational assistance to schools and participation in blood donation drives.

The ceremony brought together senior military officers, government officials, members of the diplomatic corps and residents of the North Bank Region, celebrating both Ghana’s independence and the contributions of Ghanaian Soldiers to peace and stability in The Gambia.
