ECOWAS HOLDS HIGH-LEVEL MEDIA AND CSO ENGAGEMENT AHEAD OF BENIN’S PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION

The Department of Political Affairs, Peace and Security (PAPS) of the ECOWAS Commission has organised a high-level engagement with Senior Media Professionals, Online Influencers, Bloggers and Representatives of Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) in the Republic of Benin. This initiative is designed to foster an inclusive and peaceful democratic environment ahead of the presidential poll scheduled for 12 April 2026. The engagements took place from 3rd to 6th, March 2026, at the Azalai Hotel in Cotonou, Benin.

This engagement is part of ECOWAS’ support and commitment to accompanying the Beninese people in their determination to consolidate the nation’s democratic credentials. As the country prepares for the crucial presidential poll scheduled for 12 April 2026, ECOWAS Commission is deploying an innovative and fit-for-purpose approach to ensure the information ecosystem remains resilient, inclusive and conducive for peaceful electoral process and outcome. The Engagement aims to reinforce the capacity of Media practitioners and the civil society organisations to be professional and ethical in the discharge of their roles, especially during the electioneering period.

In his opening statement at the Engagement, the Resident Representative of ECOWAS in Benin, H.E. Ambassador Amadou Diongue, represented by Mr. Ebenezer Ofosu Asiedu, Head of Democracy and Good Governance, called on media practitioners and Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) to remain steadfast pillars of stability. He urged them to conduct their activities in a manner that reinforces a peaceful and credible electoral process, ensuring that Benin continues to consolidate its significant democratic gains. He also stressed the need for Media practitioners and CSOs to reflect and adopt innovative strategies, drawing from global best practices, which will enable them to navigate the challenges, while engaging in civic duties and covering of the electoral process.

Representatives of major Media organizations, including TVs, Radios and newspapers as well as digital media space are attending the Engagement. Also in attendance at the Engagement are representatives from key CSOs, including Plateforme des Acteurs Société Civil du Benin (PASCIB), Maison de la Société Civile du Benin, ALCRER, and WANEP-Benin, among others.
