Water Management: West African Experts set out Roadmap in Dakar
14 Aug, 2025The 12th Ordinary Session of the Technical Committee of Experts (TCE) of the Permanent Coordination and Monitoring Framework (PCMF) for Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM) in West Africa was held on 9th of July 2025 in Dakar, Senegal.
Chaired by Mr Baboucar Mboundar Ngom, Secretary General of the Ministry of Hydraulics and Sanitation of Senegal, this meeting brought together national IWRM focal points, representatives of basin organisations, regional and international institutions, and ECOWAS.
The objective was to take stock of the progress made since the Abuja conference in June 2024 and to strengthen the capacity of experts in programming and preparing investment projects, particularly in the context of climate finance mechanisms.
Discussions focused on: The status of implementation of the resolutions of the Ministerial Committee for Monitoring IWRM, the 2025 work programme of the CGRE, Major regional initiatives such as the Special Project for Drinking Water Supply, the Regional Water Observatory, the West African Regional Water Forum and actions within the framework of the Water-Energy-Food-Environment Nexus and the mobilisation and training of young people around water issues through scientific innovation.
This session helped strengthen regional cooperation, share successful experiences, and identify avenues for cooperation to address water-related challenges in West Africa.
The closing session, chaired by the representative of the Senegalese Minister of Hydraulics and Sanitation, praised the quality of the discussions and the participants’ commitment to working towards sustainable and integrated water resource management in the region.
